Can you imagine having every Friday off?
What would that do for your enthusiasm levels the other four days of the workweek!?
Your engagement levels?
Your productivity levels?
Your stress levels at home and work?
The research is strong that when people put their happiness and well-being first, along with rest, rejuvenation, and the ability to recharge, they see an increase in all of these levels.
(Check out this recent New York Times article to see some research for yourself!)
Talk about a 4-day workweek has been around for a long time, and in 1956, then-Vice President Nixon said he foresaw it in the "not too distant future."
Wouldn't it be grand?
Many of you think this is not possible, especially if you work in a school. But can you imagine how much better our students would be if they were given ample time to play, explore, and rest?
I like to stay optimistic that things are starting to shift, and there have been some positive changes since Covid.
Many people are getting more of an opportunity to work from home. As a result, they are afforded more freedom and autonomy. And many times, they (and their companies) are benefitting from it.
But even if this isn't on the horizon for you yet, I want to encourage you to refelct on how you can incorporate some R, R, & R into your life just as it is now. You don't have to be hustling all the time.
In fact, you CAN'T be hustling all the time. It's going to catch up, and the effect aren't good. (More on that another time.)
What if you changed your beliefs around the daily grind and started embracing more downtime?
I hope you give yourself more permission in the New Year to be kind to yourself and allow more rest, rejuvenation, and recharge in your life.

P.P.S. Here are some of my favorite stats from the New York Times article I mentioned above:
- More than 70 companies in Britain are undergoing a six-month experiment in which their employees get a paid day off each week.
- 35 of the 41 companies that responded to a survey said they were "likely" or "extremely likely' to consider continuing the four-day workweek beyond the end of the trial.
- All but two of the 41 companies said productivity was either the same or had improved.
- Remarkably, six companies said productivity has significantly improved.
